 | Taufik in Galaxie Magazine |
With a famous singing uncle, A Ramlee and aunt, Maria Bachok (both are pop yeh yeh icons in the ‘60s and ‘70s) in the family, it comes as no surprise that Taufik Batisah has chosen music as his career.
“Music is in my blood,” enthuses the Singapore idol winner. “I grew up realizing that I’m good at doing nothing else but singing and writing my own music.” Well, not that the 28 year old fancies doing other jobs anyway.
Prior to winning the first Singapore idol in 2004, Taufik was already fronting his own band, Bona Fide and toured Malaysia as well as Singapore with our very own Cat Farish, formerly of Ruffedge. “Bona Fide does R&B and hip-hop,” he clues us in. “My best friend, who’s in the band with me, is a rapper.”
Taufik Batisah tells Noorsila Abd Majid that he’s pretty much the same guy who won the First Singapore Idol five years ago.

Has your life changed after winning the Singapore Idol?
It didn’t change the fact that I had to do national service for one and half years right after winning the reality show. I had to put singing career on hold because of that. Well I did release my debut album under Sony as part of the contract, but I couldn’t do much to promote it.
You’re back with your second album, Suria Hatiku. How different is this album compared to your debut?
My first album was a rush job, because I was tied to national service. But with this one, I’ve taken my own time to write the songs I was really focused on it. I’ve moved to a new label, Hype/SRC, which gives a lot of creative freedom.
Out of curiosity, do you own a bedroom studio?
Yes, I do. I’ve got lots of stuff in there, including my Logic Music Software, which I use to write my songs. It’s cooler than Pro Tools.
OK, what can you tell us about your personal life?
I’m still single. But I’ve had girlfriends in the past.
What kind of girl catches your eye?
I have no preference. What is most important to me is compatibility, patience, love and understanding.
Any celebrity crush?
It used to be Aishwarya Rai. But now, it’s Deepika Padukone. She’s beautiful, confident and sexy!
Are you a tech guy?
I’m trying to be internet-savvy. I’m on Facebook and Twitter now. The internet is a very powerful informative tool. It can make you or break you.
